IYTE Department of Energy Systems Engineering Joins Mediterranean Smart Energy Transformation Initiative

İzmir Institute of Technology (IZTECH) is strengthening its leading role in sustainable energy and environmentally friendly technologies through a new international collaboration. The RESt4GREEN project—funded under the Interreg NEXT MED Programme with a total budget of €2.8 million and 89% EU co-financing—has officially been launched.

Bringing together seven Mediterranean countries (Greece, Spain, Italy, Egypt, Tunisia, Jordan, and Türkiye), RESt4GREEN aims to improve public building energy performance and create greener, smarter public spaces across the region. IYTE participates as the sole partner institution from Türkiye, highlighting the university’s growing influence in international sustainability initiatives.

The project will be carried out under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Gülden Gökçen Akkurt and Assoc. Prof. Kamal Eldin Mohamed from the Department of Energy Systems Engineering, with contributions from researchers specializing in renewable energy systems, energy efficiency, and power quality.

Two Key Focus Areas: Smart Buildings & Green Public Spaces

RESt4GREEN introduces concrete, transferable solutions in two main areas:

  • Energy Efficiency in Public Buildings:
Selected pilot buildings across the Mediterranean will be equipped with smart monitoring systems, renewable energy technologies, and energy-saving strategies to reduce consumption and operational costs.

  • Next-Generation Urban Furniture:
Public parks and communal areas will host solar trees and smart solar benches, offering clean energy access for citizens and increasing awareness on sustainable living.

Digital Tools, Education, and Policy Impact

In addition to pilot installations, RESt4GREEN will develop:

  • a digital platform with educational material and energy-themed games,

  • a Joint Roadmap for energy-efficient public buildings and solar-powered outdoor areas,

  • policy recommendations for national ministries and local governments, contributing to the goals of the European Green Deal.

With its strong academic expertise and research infrastructure, IZTECH Energy Systems Engineering Department will play a key role in ensuring the project’s technical, educational, and societal impact, supporting the Mediterranean region’s transition toward a low-carbon, energy-resilient future.
